Aurora officials reacted recently to a published report by CNBC that Aurora has one of the highest tax rates in the country. According to the article, Aurora's tax rate of $.304 for each $100 of assessed value - which also is listed as 3.04% - is the third highest in the country, trailing only that of Detroit, Michigan, and Newark, New Jersey. The next two on the list of five below Aurora were Bridgeport, Connecticut. and Portland, Oregon. The report was based on an analysis of the largest city in each of the 50 states, but because of Chicago's size and the peculiarities of Cook County's tax assessment system, it chose Aurora instead, as the second largest city in the state.
